Wake Up Sid - The Devil inside.
I have always been a little crazy when it comes to hindi movies. I don't know why, but ever since I learned to switch on a television set to watch a film it was always for an Amitabh Bachchan film or some other hindi movie playing. I always knew movies could only be made in Hindi - heheheheheh. Obviouslly with time I learnt that I was wrong. I have to admit that away from home hindi movies are probably the only thing that is able enough to keep all of us together and culturally inclined, although movies do not depict any sort of culture of sorts.
Now back to the topic of today, "Wake Up Sid". I am not sure as to how many people have gone and watched the movie but I truely loved the film. Set about in contemporary India about the lazy and idealist guy who has this utopian way of viewing life - parental language would be " a good for nothing, stupid idiot". I am sure we all have this little devil inside us that always asks us to go out there and enjoy life to the fullest because living on the edge is something that we all want to do. And offcourse with time all of us have to calm down and most of us will essentially park our anchors. The little devil is quite the notorious little "us", especially when it comes to things which are taboo. Hahahaha - just makes me laugh at all the naughty things I have done when I was young and definately in the young adult hood of my life.
What amazed me about the movie was the fact that the movie was different in its story telling and the director did not take too much cinematic liberties with the plot or the characters. I think this is what keeps audiences today glued in their seats, a dose of reality with subtle hints at a common persons life. I am sure we all have revolted with family, friends and even significant others to make a point. I guess the main reason the movie is successful is because it captures the belligerence of most of us when we were trying to prove our points to family, especially the "DAD". Modern India is fast paced and although some of the veterans would not agree with the contemporary culture and mindset, one has to agree that India has moved on as a leader in its own way and that too on its own rights.
This movie is definately a different type of a movie considering the fact that Karan Johar's Dharma Productions started with the traditional masala film formula. Until very recently the production house has changed its strategy to make films based on the lives of many people or in this case, a certain phase of every persons life during their growing up days. I personally feel that the movie is a sure watch for everyone because it really does entertain the audience as well as keeps them in tangent with a common phase in their lives. Typically a Dharma Productions film includes quite a few luxurious aspects of life, however in this movie the luxurious attributes are underplayed subtly. The use of SONY products, such as playstation's, Aresenal wall mountings and off course IPOD's does get reveal that "SIddy" is very well to do.Wake Up Sid - is a magnification of what India is today, what it was in the past and how with time things change only for the better. The very fact that Mumbai (Bombay) was also a character in the movie is brilliant, especially the way the character was placed strategically in the story and the screenplay.
Who say's that cinema does not deal with management sciences or strategy...hehehehe. Offcourse can't forget to include that Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor (Siddy boy, grows up from t-shirts to shirts towards the end of the movie) do a fantastic job to etch characters which I am sure are going to be eternal for a long time. Good story, good cinematography, good screenplay and brilliant ACTING.
Watch it guys ! :)
