Once Upon A Time In Mumbai - A Classic !
Hey People –
I am sorry for being elusive, but I have been busy evaluating the recent episodes of my life. I have to admit that life by itself has many shades and it’s interesting to see how each individual lives unfold, with a bag of surprises, not to forget that some of these surprises are good and some are bad. This is what some of our talented film makers in our very own bollywood like to experiment with, and some of these films which depicts “Life / Zindagi” as a central character in the screen play and script are really brilliant.
To relate this thought with my passion for cinema is not difficult at all as the latest favourite for me is ; Once Upon A Time in Mumbai – and trust me people no movie of historic presence has ever blown me off my mind thoroughly as much as this movie. The film doesn’t beat around the bush, the movie had its share of hype prior to its release as the movie is adocumentary done to iterate the story of famous smuggler Haji Mastan – keeping in mind the consequences of sensitive sentiments fiction and imagination always helps in this astute process of film making. To try and make a movie with true facts would always be something which would be controversial in India – thus the elements of truth combined with fiction is the common route that film makers take to narrate an interesting story with an even more intriguing plot ; GURU –is something which was loosely based on Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani’s real story.
Once Upon A Time in Mumbaii is one of those films that will always be a point of reference from this day on. The movie is one of the rare movies which has Mumbai as the central character of the film and actually illustrates the charisma which this famous City of Dream contains. The film captures the true mumbaiker / Bombayites passion which quite an abundance of people still hold for the city. The screen writer has done a brilliant job of holding the story together because it is believed that Haji Mastan in his righteousness too held a similar passion for Bombay, and in the movie it is non other than Sultan Mirza !!! – all the characters in the movie are well built up with an identity and complete in their presence. A few would only agree with me when I say that the movie is an inspired tale of the sizzling 60’s and 70’s which back in the days had its own sense of panache. I still love to watch a smuggler based story such as “Johnny Mera Naam or Deeewar” - of the 60’s or 70’s because it does showcase a lot of heritage of that time and era. Once Upon A Time in Mumbai is an excellent piece of work by Balaji Telefilms because the director and the screenplay writer has done a fantastic job of delineating the past by preserving the moments and nuances which were very apt of the 60’s and 70’s with swashbuckling dialogues. Not to forget that the acting by the whole ensemble star cast is something which captivates the audiences, entertains them and makes their minds and hearts yearn and cry for the city of dreams “Bombay / Mumbai”. The movie has too many heart rendering nuances and situations which will definitely make many Bombayites / mumbaikers burst in tears. I would applaud the cinematographer for the crisp filming capabilities as the director does not always take over the camera.

Ajay Devgn has done a brilliant job as the heart rendering and messiah smuggler; Sultan Mirza and Emran Hashmi is a fantastic revelation as the evil manipulative henchman. Kangana Ranaut has learned to act and slowly mastering the craft – Prachi desai is wonderful and petite and music director Pritam Chakraborty has struck the chords this time with a bang. Milan Luthria has proven that moves with history do work. This movie is a money maker at the box office and definitely a steal on DVD’s too.
Watch it people as its brilliant to the core.
Cheers -
Soouviek :)
