"Cocktail" - Could have been much better :)

Hola People,

I am back - and believe me I have been doing movie watching like a mad man. A very warm greetings and hello. I am sure many of you probably expected this one from Saifu to be a direct rip off of "Cocktails and Maritini" by Tom Cruise ;) – well, now that I have seen it - I wouldn't really say this. Hahahaha.

For a Hindi flick this one is definitely something which is unique and different. The last Homi Adjania flick I watched with admiration was "Being Cyrus". “Cocktail" is a typical Saif Ali Khan production, by which I mean the usual back drop of a foreign location / in this case "London". It is quite obvious from Saif's swagger that London as a city is very near to him – hahahahah – to be honest “London” as a character in a script is always a pleasure to watch. As a film title “Cocktail” is symbolic in that it depicts the unusual mix of people and their respective mindsets, which by itself is a cocktail of sorts. The film revolves around Saif gallivanting the city of London as a pseudo Casanova of sorts, Deepika is Saif’s competition as the lady player who just loves to tease guys to the extent that she gets them irked, Diana Penty’s is quite convincing in her role as the quintessential Indian value oriented girl looking to settle down in the overseas / vis-a-vis UK, Randeep Hooda has a small role in the film but he is always immersed in his character – a short effective performance by him, Boman Irani ; has again surprised audiences with a different character and a different acting style ; the guy is just super to be true and last but not the least Dimple Kapadia deliver’s a cracker of a performance with sincerity and brilliance. The story begins with Saif hitting on Diana Penty at heathrow airport where he seizes the first opportunity he gets to hit on her, Diana who is caught off guard is totally disinterested and unwilling to entertain Saif's nonsense. Furthermore Diana is more preoccupied with the fact that her newly wedded hubby ; Randeep Hooda has not come to receive her at the airport, thus, being stranded Diana goes to the nearest police station to search for her hubby ; Randeep Hooda. She finally reaches him at his work place / home which is a London garage only to be humiliated by him. Being let down she walks into a cafe, it is at this cafe that she bumps into Deepika who reaches the cafe under the influence and in a super duper party mood. Deepika befriends Diana that very night and takes her to her apartment in London. During their girly bonding sessions, Diana spots Saif at a dinner meeting in a small restaurant where he is presenting the specifications and details of his new software. Deepika barges into the restaurant to put up a fake act just to humiliate Saif and get Diana her revenge. The same night Saifu meet's the girl duo at a night club and eventually seduces Deepika for the night. As the film unfolds Dimple Kapadia who plays Saifu's mother in the film visits Saifu in London and she is escorted by Boman to Deepika's pad as Saifu is in a live in relationship with Deepika. Dimple being the protective mother doesn't approve of Deepika for her boldness and to get things easier Saif points at Diana as his main love interest. While the trio play along to convince Dimple that Saif and Diana are involved, the two actually fall in love with each other. The film takes a different turn from here on as Saif admits to Deepika that he has fallen in Love with Diana and Diana too loves him. As "envy" and the pain of betrayal overtakes Deepika's feeling she forces Diana out of her house. Diana, returns to Randeep's apartment to find him in a much better mood and friendly state of mind. In the meantime, Deepika gets involved into a major road accident and Saifu rescues her and takes her to the hospital. During this time at the hospital Deepika realizes that Saifu really does love Diana and that is when she makes up her mind that she too will make a genuine effort to make Saifu and Diana meet up and be together. The story however ends in New Delhi with a similar ending like "Love Aaj Kal" :) - now, that's what I call a strong ass "Cocktail".

Saifu’s character as tech entrepreneur who is flirtatious by nature and a player by mentality is something that is funny only in parts – If Ranbir Kapoor or Shahid Kapur were cast in this role then they would have delineated the character a lot better. Saifu’s done a decent job, just that his age seemed to creep into the role especially with Deepika and Diana being half his age. This movie is a good urban movie which will work and I figure the cost of production has been kept to the lowest possible. So this movie is going to be a good investment proposition for its investors and actors. Watch it guys for the ladies - hahhaha.

Cheers :)
Soveik.
