RA.ONE - Has hit the eye but not the bulls eye !!!

Well belated Happies Diwal or as many say ; Happy dippawali. On the Bengali front it was kali pujo. At my end all the pujo's this year has been a boring affair. To top it off I had the miss fortune of spending time with a bunch of rowdy Bengali boys who act as if they have stepped on the pedestal of stardom with a job in Dubai ;) more simplistically they feel that they are real life Shahrukh Khan :)
Speaking of Mr. Shah Rukh Khan / Shahrukh or SRK...All you guys have to give it that this Delhi boy, as he is the nation's biggest star. I know Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is well revered but I guess Shah Rukh has that spark, that charisma which is seldom seen in any other actor. I guess it’s the middle class up bringing that makes him more appealing than the usual folks. At the same time one has to agree that he is a stupendous marketing guy who understands the nerves of bollywood business and cinema. Ra.One / G.One - has been a hype, it's been a hype since pre-production, post production and the final element. For starters the movie lacks cohesiveness in the script. I guess this movie was based solely to showcase the vast opportunities of special effects that lie in the talent quarters' of Red Chilies VFX. It's no doubt that the idea of a super hero is really a novel idea and then I know well it's important to show the west that we can do the same as them, but then again the Indian diasporas is used too and comfortable watching western superhero flicks with the brilliant graphics and special effects, and thus no matter how much one tries it will always remain difficult to captivate Indian audience’s minds. This movie has all the clichés which makes the watch a bit boring. I mean the comic angle of a nutty professor compiled with the craziness of a robot scientist is something that was not required. I mean if this angle been serious and comic in parts, it would have been good and it would have been more realistic. Given that the special effects were brilliant and the camera shots were super the movie really doesn't really hold up well. I know “chamak chalo” and “criminal” have a foot tapping number, but even then it doesn't really work the magic. The movie will do fantastic business because it is a Shahrukh Khan film. It is truly an expensive movie which has all the compositions of a good entertaining film right. The in film branding, the use of brands throughout the movie as well as the sale of satellite rights - I am sure the producers will break even and make a quick profit. It's obvious that the expenditure has been mostly on the production crew, the other members of the unit, the songs, the costume, the logistics and the supporting actors I don't think much of the outdoors incurred too much expenditure.
On the whole Ra.One is a kiddies film and will always be remembered in history as well as always be the movie that raised the bar of special effects in India.
